January 2011 – Thai Food, Community Kitchen

On January 31, the Salvation Army Community Kitchen had a very special guest instructor. Sharen, a professional chef from the Lakeside Resort, arrived to teach how to make two popular and delicious Thai dishes – Thai Salad Rolls and Pad Thai. Sharen wore her native Thai dress and proceeded to demonstrate how to make these very simple yet nutritious recipes.

At first the Community Kitchen participants learned to make Thai Salad Rolls. It took a bit of practice learning how to “roll the rolls” but soon everyone caught on and had a lot of fun rolling and quickly tasting their creations.

Next, Sharen moved into the kitchen and demonstrated how to make different kinds of Pad Thai. This noodle dish is sold on food carts all over Thailand and can easily be made into a meal on its own. There are endless varieties of Pad Thai and Sharen taught the class how to make vegetarian, seafood, and beef Pad Thai.

After the cooking lesson had finished, everyone sat down for a feast of Thai Salad Rolls and Pad Thai – yum, yum, yummy! Thai Salad Rolls and Pad Thai can be easily prepared and, best of all, the ingredients can be found in Penticton’s grocery stores. Thank you Sharen for introducing us to some very delicious, nutritious, and affordable Thai food!
