On November 26, the Salvation Army Community Kitchen got together and everyone made “Irish Immigrant Stew” along with corn meal biscuits and fluffy buttermilk biscuits. The community kitchen members brought a variety of vegetables and a mixture of deer, moose, and elk meat was donated as well to make the stew (which turned out rich, thick, and delicious!). The community kitchen was also shown how to make corn meal and fluffy buttermilk biscuits which went perfectly with the stew. For dessert, everyone dined on apple cake and cookies which were also tasty. The winter months are a perfect time to make stew and everyone learned the benefits of making stew from fresh local ingredients such as onions, carrots, turnips, potatoes and local wild game such as deer, moose, and elk. The homemade biscuits were a delightful combination with the stew and everyone learned how far they could stretch their shopping dollar with such a hearty and nutritious meal. The next community kitchen will feature beef barley soup and in the New Year the members will learn to make everyone’s favorite – chili!
