August 2010 – Camping at Kettle River, Rock Creek

We went camping again and ventured into a very large (over 100 sites) campground along the Kettle River in Rock Creek (40 minutes east of Osoyoos). It was a family-oriented campground with nice facilities and we had to reserve online. Of course, I am still a novice camper so I made a few mistakes which the local campground personnel quickly corrected (no taking windfall to make a fire, must put the tent on the gravel pad and not on the grassy area beside the gravel).

The kids and I had a great time and the Kettle River is gorgeous. The big attraction is floating down the river on tubes. We are used to this living in Penticton but the families we saw were having a riot. Also, we were surprised how many Europeans we saw camping and heard languages from all over the continent. We went hiking beside the river and discovered an old mine shaft, and at night we built a nice campfire and roasted hot dogs. In the morning it was very cool so we built another fire and…roasted more hot dogs!

Two of us had an early morning swim in the river which was ssssoooo cold but exhilarating! We may try to fit in one more camping trip before school starts – I cannot believe we are at the tail end of summer!
