We went camping at Jewel Lake near Greenwood (a 2 hour drive east of Penticton). I could not believe the change in the geography. In the Okanagan it is hot and dry but at Jewel Lake we were high in the mountains surrounded by tall, dark green trees. It was so quiet and at night the only sound we could hear was the call of the loons – very haunting and very beautiful. Jewel Lake was full of wildlife – chipmunks, rabbits, and a fawn walked right by our campsite too. There was no campfire ban at Jewel Lake so we had a fire which was wonderful (the kid’s first campfire). The next day we explored historic Greenwood (a fascinating history, especially the story of the Japanese internment) and then went further east to Grand Forks which is also a very picturesque town. Outside of Grand Forks we took a break and relaxed in the Kettle River. The kids went swimming and tried to cool off as the temperature soared into the 30s. Next time we will bring mommy and I am sure she will find the area just as breathtaking as we did.
